Access to affordable quantity and quality animal feed is a serious livestock production constraint and producers often experience a yield gap in dairy animals due to insufficient and low nutrient content of feed in Nepal. Research into the quality of commonly used feedstuffs and improved availability of information for farmers on suitable rations for livestock can improve livestock production and a way for sustainable intensification for smallholder systems.
The Feeding Support Tool application (app), available in English and Nepali, can be used on Android smartphones for formulating least cost, nutritionally balanced rations with locally available feed ingredients for dairy cattle and buffalo and is being adapted for goats. As a result of applying the innovation, livestock will be more productive, resulting in more income generation from improved livestock and ASF sales.
Technicians, dairy cooperatives staff, dairy producers, feed manufacturers, and agroveterinary dealers, among others.
Mission and Vision
Feeding balanced rations, to meet the nutritional requirements of dairy animals in various production stages, increases milk yields and incomes of smallholder producers and decreases feed wastage and environmental pollution. The mobile app Feeding Support Tool (FST) puts ration formulation software in the hands of smallholder dairy farmers. FST combines a least cost ration balancing software and phone app to match the nutrient needs of dairy animals to locally available feed resources. With this tool smallholder farmers have the information they need to improve the diets of their dairy animals, which can improve their productivity and health.
Farmers have not access to ration formulation information on a routine basis; through the use of an App the technology is now widely available.
