Solution
This hybrid provides a higher yielding sorghum compared to OPV varieties while maintaining drought and heat tolerance for use in lowland areas of Ethiopia.
Target Beneficiaries
Large and medium sized sorghum growers in lowland sorghum production areas of Ethiopia.
Competitive Advantage
The hybrid white sorghum variety (K9058) developed through SMIL research in partnership with the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR) has a high grain yield (14% over the hybrid check and 24% over the best open-pollinated variety). This hybrid white sorghum has excellent grain quality for food products such as injera. It demonstrates better performance, is uniform, and is stable in areas where moisture is a limiting factor. Release is planned for lowland dry areas of Ethiopia.
